In 2020, Business Insider magazine announced them as “Germany’s best VC”.

As an employer, they offer a whole list of great perks and the opportunity to work with the most exciting startups, making the world a little bit better.

But see for yourself what Stephan Schulze, CTO, has to say about Project A in our Company Portrait Series.

Project A CTO Stephan Schulze

You are an IT specialist and want companies like Project A to apply to you? Join Honeypot!

Project A is a special kind of “company” — what is it exactly that you do?

Project A is one of Europe’s leading venture capital firms, with offices in Berlin and London. Founded in 2012 as an Operational VC, we have backed more than 100 startups across 17 countries and 15 industries, including digital health, Fintech, and mobility. Our dedicated team of 120+ professionals supports our portfolio companies with software engineering, marketing, sales, hiring, and other business-critical services.

What are Project A’s values? What is it like working there?

Project A is committed to diversity and equal opportunities for all — applicants and employees alike. We value humans — with all our glorious multifaceted backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Our diverse team has different ethnic and racial origins, gender identities, sexual orientations, family arrangements, religious and political affiliations, socioeconomic statuses, ages, and abilities.

With 32 nationalities and over 25 spoken languages, we’re confident that you’ll feel right at home.

We have a work hard — play hard mindset. We enjoy spending time with each other (Friday evening parties if corona rules are allowing us, remote events, company trips to Tuscany and many more).

We have a development budget for everybody in the company and we offer lots of learning opportunities, internal trainings by experts in the field.

Our values are:

● Change is good

● Reliable partners

● No assholes allowed

● Embrace diversity

● Venture success first

● Knowledge sharing

● Use data + think one step ahead

● Obligation to dissent

● Hands-on working style

● Fix now, don’t complain later

What is your tech team working on? What are they trying to achieve?

Our teams help our portfolio companies to overcome their current technical challenges. We mainly become part of their teams and work with them side by side. This can include developing a ReactNative app and building the corresponding backend or a Single Page Application for their millions of users.

It can mean building microservices in a complex fintech environment, implementing a state machine and its processes for the proper execution of business flows or building a whole logistics backend.

Other times it is needed to set up a proper, scalable and secure cloud infrastructure on AWS, GCP or Azure, with Infrastructure as Code, proper pipelines for deployments and CI and with centralised monitoring and logging in place.

What technologies are you using?

The typical tech stacks that we work with are (from Frontend to Infrastructure):

Frontend: React(Native), VueJS, Angular

Backend: Kotlin, Java, Typescript, Python, PHP, Golang and C#

Infrastructure: AWS, GCP, rarely Azure and Terraform.

On tooling side we typically work with a standard stack out: Github/Gitlab/Bitbucket, Jira/Confluence, Slack/Teams

How has Project A adapted to the challenges of the Covid Pandemic?

We are flexible in terms of remote options.

Everybody can work remotely Germany-wide as much as they would like to, but we also offer the option to come to our modern equipped office (near Naturkunde Museum) in Berlin as often as employees want to. Everybody can work remotely from Europe altogether 3 months long in a year.

We keep our employees mentally and physically healthy (we have a 2G+ policy in the office and we offer hourly support of coaches and psychologists in case it is needed).

What are the perks of working at Project A?

Remote-friendly — work anywhere in Germany or take advantage of our beautiful and well-equipped office at the heart of Berlin.

Choose your tech — Macbook/Windows/Linux laptop and optional screen.

Career growth — access to internal workshops, knowledge sharing meetups, PAV Academy professional training opportunities, industry conferences, and other personal development possibilities.
